Why should i trim my puppy's eyes at home?
There are several reasons why it is important to know how to trim your puppy’s eyes at home.
First, and most importantly, your puppy needs to be able to see! When their hair is covering their eyes, it impedes their vision and can potentially be dangerous since they can’t see what they’re doing or where they’re going.
Second, having properly trimmed eye hair will make your photos of your precious pup soooo much better! Being able to see their eyes in a picture of them will make the photo ten times cuter.
Lastly, knowing how to trim your puppy’s eyes at home will save you all those extra trips to the groomer! Trimming their eyes at home will extend the time between groomings, saving you both time and money!
Materials needed
You don’t need a lot of supplies to be able to trim your puppy’s eyes at home. You only really need a good pair of grooming scissors! Ones that we recommend can be found here. If you’re wanting to go to the next level, however, and do some fancier trims, we also recommend this grooming kit.

The first thing you want to do is pull all of the hair away from your puppy’s eyes. This will expose all of the hair that needs to be trimmed and allow you to see what exactly should be cut off with the scissors.
You can do this by gently pinching your fingers together and pulling the hair down and out away from their eyes.
Next, before you start trimming, be sure you have a firm hold on your puppy’s face and head. This will ensure that you won’t accidentally cut them since they won’t be able to make any sudden movements.
We also highly recommend and encourage you to have someone else hold your puppy for you, so that way you don’t have to both keep your puppy still and have to trim their eyes at the same time.
Once your puppy is still, you are ready to start trimming!
Start to work from the outside and slowly make your way towards the inner corner of your puppy’s eye. Be sure to keep the scissors away from your puppy’s actual eye, and never have the tip of the scissors near their eye.
Once you have the immediate eye area trimmed, you can slightly trim over the bridge of their snout to ensure that none of that hair is impeding their vision as well.
